Half-ton, midsize or heavy-duty?
- Midsize (Ranger, Maverick, Tacoma, Colorado, Canyon): easier to park in Kelowna or Penticton, cheaper to run, and enough for a small boat or utility trailer. The Maverick comes with a 4.5 ft box; the Ranger crew cab with a 5 ft box.
- Half-ton (F-150, Silverado 1500, Ram 1500): the Okanagan default. Crew cabs with a 5.5 or 6.5 ft box cover family use, travel trailers and most towing.
- Heavy-duty (F-350, F-450, Ram 3500): for fifth wheels, big boats and work. A bonus at tax time: trucks over ¾-ton pay a flat 7% PST from a dealer at any price, instead of 10% from $57,000.
Cab and box: say what you need
On OK Auto Search you can search the way you’d describe it, for example “F-150 crew cab 6.5 ft box 4x4”. Box length isn’t always in a listing; when it isn’t, we show the truck with a note to ask the seller instead of hiding it.
- Crew cab (SuperCrew, CrewMax, Crew Cab): four full doors and a real back seat.
- Extended cab (SuperCab, Double Cab, Quad Cab): smaller rear doors and seat, usually a longer box.
- Box: under 6 ft is short, around 6.5 ft is standard, 8 ft is long. A longer box makes a longer truck, so check it fits your driveway or garage.
Before you buy any used truck here
- 4x4 and tires: almost every truck listed here is 4x4, but winter-rated tires are what keep you legal on the Connector and the Coquihalla. See the winter tire rules.
- History and liens: run the ICBC, lien and recall checks, especially on trucks with high kilometres or out-of-province history.
- Towing wear: ask what it towed and how often, look at the hitch and brakes, and have a mechanic check the transmission and cooling system.
- Kilometres: trucks here rack up highway kilometres fast. A well-maintained truck with highway kilometres can be a better buy than a low-kilometre one with no records.
